As part of the Lagan Gateway project, we manufactured and installed our standard leisure and canoe pontoons upstream, and downstream, of the newly built lock on the River Lagan.

Replacing an unattractive and inefficient pen weir south of Belfast, which controlled water levels between Stranmillis and Newforge, the Lagan Gateway project has modernised this section of the river with the provision of a state-of-the-art lock, a cascade weir and pedestrian bridge.
With the movement of river traffic previously restricted, our new pontoons offer boaters and watersports enthusiasts a stable and secure place to moor while waiting to traverse the new lock.
Taking into account the different sizes of vessels that will be using the hardwood fendered pontoons, we designed the standard leisure pontoons with 500mm of freeboard and the canoe pontoons with just 300mm of freeboard, ensuring easy access and egress onto the pontoons from all types of craft.
Topped with our unique grey glass reinforced concrete (GRC) decking, users of the pontoons are assured of a safe, non-slip waiting area, all year-round.
“The Lagan Gateway has been an exciting project to work on,” says Maeve Parker, our senior marina engineer. “As part of a large project, we were working with many different parties, including Lagan Construction Limited and Belfast City Council, therefore good communication was key.
“Now completed, there is safe access across the weir and the new pontoons are available to provide a platform for a wide range of visitors to participate in boating and watersports on the River Lagan.”
