The new concrete pontoons replaced ageing berth infrastructure that had been in service for more than 40 years. The wider works included new wall guides, brows, access gangways and upgraded water and electrical services, creating a robust berthing facility capable of supporting the naval base’s operational tug fleet.
The pontoons were designed for demanding use, providing the stability and durability required for large and powerful tug vessels and the personnel who use them.
What did the project involve?
The existing tug berth pontoons had been in service for more than 40 years and required replacement to provide a safer, more resilient and future-ready berthing solution.
Our reinforced concrete pontoons were selected for their long-term durability in aggressive marine environments, resistance to corrosion and reduced maintenance requirements compared with traditional steel or older-style pontoon systems.
The three units had to make their way by HGV from our HQ in Ireland to Portsmouth, where they were offloaded by crane into the water before being towed round into the base. Moving units measuring 20m x 4m is never simple, but with the expertise and experience of Whittens and Portico, the move went completely to plan.

“This upgrade not only improves safety and reliability today, but ensures the Tidal Basin is ready to support operations long into the future.”
KBS Maritime
The project was delivered for KBS Maritime at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, supporting the operational requirements of the Royal Navy and associated harbour services. We supplied the hardware to principal contractor Herbosch-Kiere, who delivered the wider project.
Who will benefit?
The principal beneficiaries are the Royal Navy, Naval Base personnel, tug operators and crews operating within Portsmouth Naval Base.
The facilities support the existing tug fleet, including SD Tempest, identified by KBS as the largest tug currently in service at the base, with a displacement of 855 tonnes.
Future tug and harbour operations will also benefit from infrastructure designed with sufficient flexibility to accommodate evolving vessel and operational requirements.
The new concrete pontoon system provides a safer, more stable and more durable tug berthing facility while reducing long-term maintenance requirements.
